Dreadlord is a game of international politics. Lord Arturius must decide the fate of his land and the lands surrounding his.

Domestic controls:
Each territory has four attributes and four control mechanisms to manipulate those attributes.

Attributes:
Stability: The land's stability rating is a measure of the degree of order in the land and the ruler's ability to control it. Low stability can be fatal (though only in the completed version).
Economy: The land's economic stability. It is a factor in tax income.
Resources: Resources is a measure of the land's ability to wage long-term wars. Each time a land is involved in a military battle this value decreases. If the battle reduces the land's resources to 0, its army will begin to lose levels.
Popularity: This is a measure of the peasant's opinion of the ruler. A low value means a greater likelyhood of a peasant revolt. Peasant revolts don't occur in the demo.

Control Mechanisms:
Control mechanisms are one means to control the above attributes and gain other benefits. Each has a value from 1-4, 1 being below average, 2 being average, and 3-4 being above average. Except for taxes, higher levels will cost more to maintain.
Taxation: This controls tax revenues. Having high taxes means the economy and popularity will drop, while below average values will improve the economy and popularity scores.
Security: This determines how safe you are from espionage and sabotage. It is not used in the demo, though you can modify this if you want to.
Soul Harvesting: Your kingdom is reliant on undead soldiers for defense. The more peasants you "recruit" the greater your reserves will grow, but be careful, becasuse you might start a peasant uprising instead.
Subterfuge: This controls how much you hide activities from the kingdom of the living. A lower rating means you will be attacked more frequently by heroes, while a higher rating means you may not be attacked much at all.

Other actions:
You can perform other actions per season, to a total of 3 actions per season. These actions include:
Speaking to peasants: Nothing quite spoils a good peasant uprising like a well-spoken speech.
Hosting a Festival of Undeath: You're the living dead, and proud of it. This will boost reserves and stability.
Adjust the economy: A few tweaks and the economy should be ready to have the shit taxed out of it all over again.
Training the army: Your army is really weak when you first start. You need to level them up and research new skills so they can face the challenges ahead.
Researching items/weapons: Researching new goods will be the fast track to success.
Negotiating with rivals: Whether giving a gift, plotting against the others, negotiating an alliance, or just sitting down and talking... we know you aren't that lame... just kidding. It's smart, especially in the full version.
Attacking rivals: Nothing like a good war to settle the differences.
